Digital Subsriber Lines Overview
What is DSL?
DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line, a long-proven technology that provides fast Internet connections over standard telephone lines. It offers superior speed and performance at an economical monthly price -- without complicated pricing constraints like distance and usage charges. Best of all, DSL provides a persistent, always-on connection. You'll never again have to waste time dialing into your ISP (and possibly getting a busy signal). Whenever your computer is ready to connect, your DSL connection is ready too. That powerful continuous connection can change the way you depend on the Internet and e-mail, or your corporate LAN.
Industrial-Strength Bandwidth
DSL is a high-quality SDSL solution that offers the same speed rates for uploading and downloading. It is ideal for business use and advanced applications such as intranets, extranets, virtual private networks (VPNs), file transfer, electronic commerce, Web hosting, videoconferencing, collaborative work, multimedia and more. Learn more about the benefits of DSL by downloading a NorthPoint data sheet (Adobe Acrobat required).
An Ideal Business Solution
DSL uses Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) technology, which offers the same speeds for both uploading and downloading data. That makes it the perfect Internet connection for businesses where sending information is just as important (if not more so) than receiving information.
Sold through many leading Internet Service Providers (ISP's) across the country, DSL is available at speeds ranging from 144 Kbps, to 1.5 Mbps.
A DSL Internet connection offers businesses these valuable benefits:
- High-Speed: With speeds ranging from 5 to 25 times that of the fastest analog modems, DSL enables businesses to fully participate in the exploding multimedia richness of the World Wide Web. Your DSL connection also has built-in scalability, which means your speed can grow as your business grows. Upgrading your DSL is as easy as calling your ISP. No expensive start-up or new equipment costs.
- Always On: Unlike dial-up Internet connections, with DSL you'll never have to wait for a modem to establish an Internet connection -- and you'll never get a busy signal. DSL delivers instant Internet access whenever you need it. And the always-on DSL connection means your business can have a dedicated presence on the Internet, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Cost Effective: Best of all, DSL gives you the benefits of a fast, always-on Internet connection at a fraction of the cost of traditional high-speed solutions. For example, your business can get a complete Internet connection package that includes a 416 Kbps DSL connection and Internet access for as low as $179 a month. That's less than half the cost of a dedicated 56 Kbps connection. And because DSL is a business-class service, multiple users can share the always-on service. One telephone line with a DSL modem or router does it all! No multiple telephone lines and modems.
- No Hassle Internet Access: We install your DSL line and equipment so it's ready to use; no complicated configuration is required. And with DSL, your ISP is your one-stop source for handling all installation, maintenance, and billing details. You'll receive a single invoice for the DSL service and ISP services.
What Your Business can do with a DSL Connection
DSL enables your business to harness the power of the Internet to work smarter and gain competitive advantage. Here are some of the things your business can do with a DSL connection:
- Speed up the World Wide Web. Faster Web access means your employees are more productive.
- Run a Web server. A DSL connection means you can run your own in-house Web server for e-commerce or to support geographically dispersed teams. Running your own Web site allows you the freedom to develop your Web site the way you want, easily make updates, save money and much more.
- Videoconference. With the power of DSL, you can use video conferencing as a practical solution, saving travel time and costs.
- Create Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). VPN is built into DSL equipment to enable telecommuters and businesses with multiple locations to communicate securely over the Internet like the big guys but at a fraction of the cost.
- Move programs and files quickly. A DSL connection is more reliable and faster, which means moving large programs and files takes a lot less time. A 72 MB file takes 25 minutes at 56 Kbps but a mere 48 seconds at 1.54 Mbps.

5 Step Installation
There are several steps to ordering and installing DSL. We'll make it as easy as possible for you, but here's what you can expect.
- You order service at your ideal speed, and any needed equipment, from One Online.
- We contact your local phone company to alert them to install a new clean, copper wire circuit.
- Your local phone company schedules a date and installs the new line; they may not even need to come into your office or home, but it's good to be around in case they need access to a restricted area such as a phone closet, garage or area behind a locked fence.
- We call you to schedule a date for the inside wiring installation to take place; this is where you'll get the actual DSL line pulled into your office or home.
- Once the line is installed, we will provide your IP addresses and do any additional equipment installation.
The length of time all this takes varies depending on the availability of circuits from the telephone company, but in general expect your DSL to be up and running in 20 to 30 business days.
